After more than two decades of helping clients grow their estate planning law firms, boost profits and enhance their quality of life (a side benefit of a strategic plan!) IMS knows what it takes to transform a firm from so-so to spectacular. Clients who spend a few days with us at strategic planning retreats see the results. Here’s some of what we tackle during this structured process:
Do you know what the institutional goals of the firm are? It’s easy to say “We want more clients,” but that won’t move the needle. The more specific you can get, the better targeted and effective your efforts will be. Do you want more clients in the 40-50 year age bracket? Or do you define your target client not by age but by assets? Or would you prefer to take any age, any asset level, if their values are aligned with yours? These three different targets require different strategies.
Do you know what you are working for? Let’s say your mortgage was paid, your retirement accounts stuffed to the max and you weren’t working for the income. What would you be working for? If a sense of satisfaction from helping seniors is your guiding ethos, your plan will be different than if you are strictly focused on high earnings.
How does work integrate with life outside of the office? Millennials are all about a balanced life, more so than Boomers ever were. How does your law firm handle a work-life balance? This speaks to the values of the firm and its goals. Have you ever defined them, or are you winging it and hoping for the best?
How do you eat an elephant? Small bites. For any big changes being made to the law firm, you’ll need to break the changes into small steps. Once we define goals, we help you work out the steps to get there.
What’s your vision for the future? You can continue to go about the day-to-day demands of your practice—there’s always plenty to do. But is that enough, are you satisfied with how the firm is growing? What about your professional growth as a law firm leader? A strategic planning retreat will move your practice and your professional life forward.
