All great marketing plans will include social media in one way or another. Integrity Marketing is constantly researching the current benefits and future promises of social media marketing, and we include a social aspect to all of our marketing recommendations. Why? Because it works! Social media helps you establish a presence and a personality on the internet. It can turn the perception of a cold, closed law firm into one of a warm, inviting person….you! Don’t let your inviting personality be covered up.
So, since social media marketing works so well…why don’t more attorneys and law firms use this strategy to its highest potential? I have done a little bit of research and found the three most common reasons:
1. Your current strategy is already working. You get enough incoming business from referrals. You attend offline events and you have a Rolodex full of contacts and business cards.
Consider this: unless you are speaking with these people face-to-face, they are not thinking about you. Take these names and contacts and search for them on LinkedIn or Facebook. We found that those who excel at personal networking tend to do AWESOME on social media once they learn how…it will create MORE business for you…and who is too busy for more business?2. You don’t have anything worth talking about, or mentioning.
“Just ate a sandwich”, “At the gym”, “Bored”. These are all tiresome and unexciting comments we are exposed to on Facebook every day. You know how irritating these comments are, and you don’t want to join the crowd by posting things people don’t want to read.
Then don’t! Be different! Be bold! Remember the 80-20 rule. 80% of your comments should be light-hearted and educational. 20% can be professional/coming from a marketing standpoint. You have many options when it comes to daily status updates for your law firm: how-to articles, news articles, events, Q&A’s. Your social media should be all about educating, engaging and even entertaining those who follow you (yes even friends and family).
3. You think you don't have TIME.
You are already swamped with too much to do -- you have to run the business, meet with clients, draft documents, schedule workshops, prepare materials, deliver workshops, take folks to lunch, ad infinitum.
We all have the same 24 hours in every day, no one gets more or less. We all have to allocate that time appropriately. You take time for the things that are important to you, and nothing is more important to your business than a strong grasp on marketing! If you really cannot manage social media yourself, then let me introduce you to your new best friends: Delegate and Outsource.
