Have you purchased multiple domains or at least thought about doing so? It’s a pretty common thing to do and a pretty easy concept to understand. However, is it benefiting you at all?
Businesses like to buy multiple domains for their website. Why not? While checking out on GoDaddy, you can add a couple more domains for just a few bucks each. For example, say you are going to purchase ElDoradoEstatePlanning.com. You can also snag ElDoradoAssetProtection.com, ElDoradoElderLaw.com, and ElDoradoTrusts.com. I mean, why not? You do all those things in your practice, right?
It can be smart to purchase multiple domains, but maybe not for the reasons you think.
1. Multiple domain names will help my SEO.
Multiple domain names do not help your SEO. As a matter of fact, if used incorrectly, they can actually hurt your search engine rankings. Without proper redirects, Google might mistake your website for duplicate content, which is a big no-no for them.
2. Multiple domain names help you with “double branding”.
It's easy to see why peope think ElDoradoElderLaw.com is going to attract Elder Law clients, and EldOradoEstatePlanning.com will attract those needing wills, trusts, and other planning. However, if you have no website to back up both domains, the keywords in the domain do very little to nothing to help you. You would need two separate websites with separate content to distinguish the two. Then a whole other set of problems arise. Google tries to peg you as two different businesses when you're not, and your rankings might suffer. If you are one business, use one broader domain name.
3. Buying multiple domains keeps my competitors from buying them.
The best and most helpful reason to buy extra domains is to keep your competitors down the road from doing so. While this has zero direct benefit to your SEO, it can help keep other websites off Page One and help you keep your dominance. ElDoradoEstatePlanning.com is a very powerful domain name, due to the presence of both the City and the Keyword. It's a common term that people might type into search. If you want to use this strategy, I suggest purchasing no more than 5 other domains. Domains can get expensive over time, and who knows if it's actually worth it in the end.
